In a quick response to its fast loosening grip on the Asian market and other low-end-loving markets in the world, Samsung has decided to come out of its shell by offering a series of budget smartphones that pack amazing features. This explains why the smartphone giants launched the Samsung Galaxy M10 & M20 in January 2019.

Here, we’d be discussing the prices of the Samsung Galaxy M20 in Nigeria. We’d also be looking at its specs before finally doing a detailed review on every aspect of the device. Our aim is to help you make a well-informed decision to go for the device or not.

Samsung Galaxy M20 Price in Nigeria

Despite that Samsung promoted the Galaxy M20 as an affordable device, the retail price in Nigeria is not so affordable. The 3GB/32GB version of the device costs between N85,000 and N90,000, while the 4GB/64GB version costs between N100,000 and N115,000.

Samsung Galaxy M20 Review

It’s very obvious that Samsung, with this device, intended to make it a big hit, especially among low-end consumers. And on paper, it looks like a complete smartphone that anyone would love to have.

But does the M20 really match up to the hype in reality? Read on to learn what we figured out about this new release from almighty Samsung!

Design

When compared with Samsung’s recent releases, the Galaxy M20 obviously looks very basic, but completely unique. At first sight, you won’t miss the device’s waterdrop-like v-notch and very thin bezels.

The phone is packed in a polycarbonate plastic body that feels smooth and glossy to touch. The material and finish aren’t prone to cracking and don’t catch fingerprint. The device fits in the hand perfectly and is good to hold — thanks to the curves on all its sides. Its nice shape also makes it easy to slide into pockets and pull out when needed.

On the back of the device, you’d see the fingerprint sensor, which has an oval shape and is easy to reach with your finger. On the left side lie the SIM card tray and the volume rocker. And on the bottom is the speaker grill, audio jack, and the USB Type-C port.

The Samsung Galaxy M20 won’t win awards for premium looks, and it doesn’t need to — since it wasn’t made for premium consumers.

Display

The Samsung Galaxy M20 sports a 6.3-inch FHD display with 2349 x 1080 resolution. The display is a PLS TFT panel. Just so you know, the PLS (Plane Line Switching) is Samsung’s trademark display technology, which is similar to IPS (In-Plane Switching).

As one would expect from any Samsung device, the display is colorful and viewing angles are impressive in both indoor and outdoor lighting conditions. It’s so sharp and bright that it catches your eyes once you turn it on. But, to be frank here, you won’t get the high color saturation and deep blacks that you’d see on an AMOLED display.

Interface

Samsung’s TouchWiz, at one time, was under heavy criticisms for being heavily loaded with unnecessary features. But Samsung between then and now, Samsung has improved drastically on the interface aspect — presently offering the smoother and more modern Samsung Experience version 9.5 UX. This interface is highly customizable, as you can tweak the appearance as you want.

The user interface on the Galaxy M20 is the same as that obtainable on Samsung’s high-end smartphones. Its app drawer has smooth animations and app transitions. You won’t see any lags or hiccups. Don’t be surprised, though, that some unnecessary apps still come with the device. While some can be uninstalled, you’d be stuck with others — but you can disable them.

One thing we didn’t like about the Galaxy M20 is that it runs on Android 8.1 Oreo. That’s not cool at all for a device launched in 2019. In that aspect, Samsung really goofed!

Performance

The Galaxy M20 is powered by the new Exynos 7904 octa-core processor, which is expectably impressive, as it strikes a balance between raw power and battery consumption.

Backed by up to 4GB of RAM and 64GB built-in memory, the processor runs every app without problems, but we don’t expect you to push it to the limits by running over 20 apps in the background. In that case, you might see some slowness.

Another impressive aspect of the Samsung Galaxy M20 that we can’t help but mention is its SAR rating, which is 0.28 W/kg. This is much lower when compared with what’s obtainable in competing devices. For example, Honor 10 Lite has SAR of 0.755 W/kg. For starters, SAR is the measure of radiofrequency energy that the device emits — for your body to absorb! And the lower the SAR of a device, the better. So, the Galaxy 20 is far safer to use also.

Multimedia

With its massive 6.3 inch display (19.5:9 aspect ratio), the Galaxy M20 is no doubt a perfect match for watching Netflix and Amazon Prime in FHD. In short, it’s a great device for watching videos.

The device also supports Dolby Atmos audio, which means if you’re using a headphone while watching video on the device, you’d be enjoying a complete movie-watching, cinema-like experience.

The device is also great for listening to music. Its bottom mono-speaker is clear but very soft. And to accommodate as much as possible of your multimedia and other files, the device comes with a microSD card slow that allows for extra 500GB of storage space.

Camera

The Samsung Galaxy M20 sports a dual camera setup on the back, comprising a 13MP primary camera and a 5MP secondary camera. While the output is impressive, we won’t pretend that it matches with what obtains on more sophisticated devices.

The device also sports an 8MP front camera, which creates photos that are clearer and brighter than what you’ll get from most other front cameras. The outputs are just about decent.

Battery

If you’re living in Nigeria, this is the aspect that should interest you the most. And interestingly, it’s one of the biggest upsides of the Galaxy M20. The 5000mAh non-removable battery is a beast! And what’s even more amazing is the fact that it’s coming in a budget device.

We won’t go into details of how much you’d get from the battery. You should be able to roughly estimate that on your own. All we can say is that the battery is a beast! And the sweeter part, the device comes with fast charging.

Wrap-up

If your dream has always been to use a Samsung phone, but your pocket has always failed you, it seems Samsung just read your mind with this new release. So, you too can hop on the Samsung bandwagon and enjoy the great features that this device packs without getting a “salary advance” or “cooperative” loan.

While the device has a number of impressive features, its relatively lower price and badass battery are the two features that would sway most Nigerian consumers towards it.
